DETAILED ITINERARY
DAYS 1 & 2: SUSSI & CHUMA LODGE, Livingstone, Zambia
Upon arrival in Livingstone, the guests will be met and transferred by road to Sussi & Chuma for 2 romantic nights and the days discovering what Livingstone has to offer.
Sussi and Chuma Lodge is an enchanting riverbank hideaway just 10 minutes upstream of the Victoria Falls along the Zambezi River next to Zambia's Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park. It is named after David Livingstone’s faithful friends and consists of an exclusive upmarket lodge and a spacious two-bedroom villa, both of which take full advantage of their enchanting riverbank setting.
Guest accommodation consists of 12 luxury tree houses built into the living canopy of giant ebony trees lining the bank. Each unit has a private view of the mighty Zambezi River from its own deck among the branches and is equipped with en-suite facilities, air conditioning, mini bar, mosquito nets, overhead fans, tea/coffee facilities as well as a hair dryer. The chalets are linked to the main lodge via raised wooden walkways above the ground thus allowing visiting hippo and elephant free access without compromising guests’ safety. The main building features a spectacular raised bar/lounge deck, open air dining area, curio shop, swimming pool and lawns sweeping down to the water’s edge. Meals are table d’hôte with a large selection of dishes, served alfresco, often around a campfire in the evening.
Guest can enjoy game drives in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park where Zambia's only white rhino can be spotted or picturesque early morning or Sunset River cruises on a 12-seater boat. A cultural tour of Livingstone including a visit to the Museum and the Simonga Village is a must for guests to this area as well as a guided tour of the Victoria Falls and rain forest on the Zambian side. A shopping tour in Livingstone town also provides an opportunity to experience the local flavour of Livingstone while guests may also enjoy fishing in the Zambezi River. A variety of adrenaline activities are available which include white water rafting, canoeing, helicopter and micro light adventures, horseback safaris, elephant back safaris and lion walks as well as bungee jumping.
Area Description – Livingstone - Livingstone is a historic colonial town most famous for its proximity to the Victoria Falls. The town has experienced a revival in the last decade with the old colonial style buildings which line the shaded main avenue, being renovated and now housing shops, cafes and a variety of local businesses. Livingstone offers a wide range of activities from the challenge of white water rafting and bungi jumping, to the awe-inspiring elephant back safaris and sunset cruises. Livingstone has something for everyone.
The Victoria Falls are one of the Seven Wonders of the World and is the largest sheet of falling water on earth - a spellbinding and mesmerising spectacle. The sheer mass of water cascading down the 100m drop across nearly 2km makes a thunderous roar and creates a magnificent spray of water that can be seen for miles - hence the local name 'mosi oa tunya' meaning 'the smoke that thunders'. Water flow over the Falls varies throughout the year. The river's annual flood season is February to May when the spray can reach a height of over 400m, this is spectacular from above but it makes it very difficult to see the Falls at ground level as it is under a heavy shower/mist. Water levels start dropping in August and are at their lowest October - December when much of the rocky face becomes dry. At times of low water, the falls are best viewed from the Zimbabwe side or from Livingstone Island.
DAYS 3, 4 & 5: CHOBE CHILWERO, Bordering Chobe National Park, Botswana
Guests will depart after breakfast for a road & boat transfer to Chobe Chilwero in Kasane. Clients will spend 3 nights at Chobe Chilwero experiencing excellent game viewing in the famous Chobe National Park & cruising on the Chobe River..
Chobe Chilwero is located on the border of the Chobe National Park. Chilwero means “place of high view” in the local language of Setswana which accurately describes this exquisite lodge, set above the Chobe River with unparalleled panoramic views across the islands and flood plains as far as Namibia.
This boutique lodge has nine double and six twin luxury thatched cottages, all of which are individually designed to blend in perfectly with the topography and natural vegetation of the surrounding area. For families the lodge offers two twin cottages next to each other. Each luxury cottage has its own en-suite bathroom with a large sunken handcrafted bath, indoor and outdoor showers, private garden, “sala” or private balcony, mosquito nets, ceiling fans and air-conditioning. The main public area includes an elegant lounge and dining room, which are linked to spectacular outdoor viewing patios. While at Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero, a visit to the spa is an absolute must. The full-service spa offers a range of treatments and rituals of the highest quality to relax, restore and revitalize guests. Authentic African design has been integrated with, and inspired by, the abundance of nature that surrounds the lodge. Great care has been taken in selecting brands, treatment methods and practices that are environmentally friendly. Treatments are provided by trained professionals, and include products from both the Africology and Thalgo lines. Spa facilities include an indoor spa bath, Vichy showers, hydrotherapy, plunge pool, relaxation area and private treatment rooms - one of which is elevated in the treetops.
For game viewing, Chobe Chilwero offers guests complete flexibility. The games drive are led by qualified professional guides in customised open 4 x 4 game viewing vehicles and especially adapted safari motorboats. Fishing excursions are also available on the Chobe River with tiger fish and bream being the main catch. Sundowner cruises are a highlight offering views of spectacular sunsets on the Chobe River.
Area Description – Chobe River Front - The Chobe River Front is a remarkable wildlife area due to the permanent water source of the Chobe River. However its accessibility from Kasane and neighbouring towns of Victoria Falls and Livingstone has created quite a busy tourist area with larger hotels and lodges than you find in the more remote Okavango Delta. The spectacle of all the animals coming to drink and frolic at the water's edge is one to behold, particularly in the dry season (May - Oct) where water is scarce away from the river. It is an area famous for its abundance of elephants, a variety of predators and, in addition, you are likely to see herds of buffalo and possibly even roan and sable antelope. In the rainy season (Nov - Apr) the game is much less concentrated at the river as the wildlife spread throughout the greater area of Chobe National Park due to availability of surface water from nearby pans. This assists the vegetation on the river banks in recovering from the massive herds that are attracted to the area in the dry months. The summer rains bring beautiful wild flowers, exquisite scenery, impressive bird life and an abundance of young animals usually born around November/December. The spectacular Chobe sunsets alone are worth a visit to the area. Please note that activities are restricted within the national park in accordance with government rules and regulations: these include no driving off-road, no walking and no driving after dark.
Chobe Game Lodge is the only lodge situated within the National Park. The remainder of the lodges, hotels and guesthouses in the Chobe area are located along the river in the town of Kasane, adjacent to the park. In addition there are some lodges situated further out of Kasane and in the Chobe Forestry Reserve, namely Muchenje Safari Lodge and Elephant Valley Lodge for those looking for something in more of a bush setting.
