Brothers Safaris Newsletter February 2010

Well 2010 has finally arrived and we would like to wish you and your loved ones a very happy, healthy and blessed year.
FIFA World Cup, South Africa

OK, so the FIFA World Cup 2010, South Africa is around the corner.... Just over 4 months to go until hordes of football/soccer fans hit South Africa.  If you, or if any of your friends or family, are heading out to South Africa for the World Cup, remember Brothers Safaris can help with ALL of your booking requirements.  We can book flights (both international and domestic), land transfers, accommodation for any part of Africa, and anything else y ou may need.

Currently we are holding several units in Kruger National Park on the nights of 18 & 19 July 2010 (directly after the World Cup) which are available to our clients.  Most camps are already totally full during this time, so contact us straightaway if you are interested in booking any of this accommodation!

As you know we now have a dedicated travel consultant that will deal with your requests exclusively.  Please contact Sue on info@brotherssafaris.com.

Lecturing and Marketing in the USA
Dr Peter Brothers left for the USA on 6 January for a 3 week lecturing and marketing trip.  He was very kindly asked to attend as a guest speaker for the Wildlife and Exotics Symposium at Tennessee Veterinary Faculty (School), Knoxville. The symposium was a great success and he was impressed by the standard of lectures and wet labs presented at the symposium.

During his stay in the States he visited 8 Veterinary Faculties in total, where he presented a variety of lectures and dart gun labs. Although he arrived home exhausted, and lecturing in his sleep, the trip was a great success based on the feedback from the students. In addition we already have a high number of additional students booked onto this year’s courses, and are also taking provisional bookings for 2011 courses. Any veterinary schools interested in being part of the next trip – late 2010 or early 2011 – should please contact us in advance, as some schools have already done!

A big thank you to the various students and lecturers at each faculty who were instrumental in making this possible, by not only making so many logistical arrangements, but also by securing funding to help cover some of the costs. Although Brothers Safaris pays the balance of the costs and Dr Brothers volunteers his time, Dan Inject USA very kindly assists financially AND provides ALL the equipment for the dart gun wet labs and liaises with each school to get the CO2 to them, etc – thank you so much Paul and Carol! For more information on their great products, or to acquire the best dart gun around (and the one I use here in South Africa as a wildlife vet in the field!), please visit their website: www.daninjectusa.com

We are ruuning 4 Standard Wildlife Immobilisation & Conservation Courses  and one Advanced Wildlife Immobilisation & Conservation Course this year and since the trip to the States the bookings have been coming in thick and fast so if you wish to attend one of these courses, please contact us on info@brotherssafaris.com to book your place.

We do receive countless enquiries from students wishing to participate in the Advanced Wildlife Immobilisation & Conservation Course, but would like to point out that this course is specifically designed for vet students that have already attended the standard course, as well as for qualified veterinarians already in practice.

Remember that our veterinary courses have been submitted to the South African Veterinary Council and approved for continuing education/continuing professional development by the council, reflecting the quality of the course and tuition offered.  2010 course accreditation is pending.

Species Specific Interactive Safaris
Species Specific Interactive Safaris give guests the opportunity to focus on a species of their choice and get to know it inside out, while still enjoying general game (wildlife) viewing and participating in unusual activities involving your species of choice!

These safaris often start in a controlled environment such as a breeding centre, which allows time to observe characteristics and behaviour from up close while getting to know your favourite wildlife species. Sometimes there is also the opportunity to participate in an immobilisation procedure during this time, if any routine management procedures need to be carried out. The safari then moves to a more remote reserve where we interact with scientists and field researchers to learn more about our chosen species and its adaptations in the particular wildlife sanctuary we are working in. Where possible, guests are afforded the opportunity to participate in \"unusual\" activities involving your species , such as tracking exercises using tracking equipment (Telemetry).

During this second half of this safari there are generally one or more immobilisation procedures with the species in question, which create the most exhilarating experience of all!  As always, activities are optional and guests have a choice as to how hands-on they wish to be.

These safaris are normally 7 or 8 days in duration, which allows ample time for general game viewing and relaxation, ensuring that your safari is not limited to one species. We also stay at several lodges during this time giving you a regular change of scenery. Groups are small, and are normally limited to 8 persons on a sharing basis, ensuring a personal experience. In certain instances bigger groups can be accommodated upon request.

Your participation ensures sizeable financial contributions to the conservation bodies we work with, thus contributing directly to the conservation of your chosen species.

Currently Brothers Safaris offers a Big Cat Safari and will soon have a new Elephant & Rhino Safari in this category too.

Brothers Safaris will gladly assist you in planning your pre and post safari requirements to give you the complete tailor-made African safari!

Join us on a Species Specific Interactive Safari and know that your dreams about Africa will never be the same again.

Looking ahead......
2010 is shaping up to be an even busier year. To view the dates and availability of our 2010 Wildlife and Immobilisation Courses, as well as all the other safaris, please use our Safari Planner

Please feel free to give us your comments on the newsletter so that we can keep it relevant - whether you find it interesting, what you want to see more of, suggestions to improve it, etc. Always good to hear from you and appreciate the feedback, thank you, even if we don’t get to reply to all the wonderful emails we receive.

God bless.

Warm African regards,

The Brothers Safaris Team

Veterinary Science in Wildlife Management

We know that we have already told you about this safari in the last newsletter but we feel it is a great safari and needs another mention.....

This safari takes you ‘behind the scenes’, giving you the opportunity to interact with researchers, ecologists, vets and guides while discovering the fantastic world of wildlife in Southern Africa, from a Veterinary perspective. You will also meet with colleagues from across the world, and share with them on a professional and social level.

There are also “traditional” tourism activities and wildlife viewing included in the programme, thus making the programme ideal for first time visitors and non-vet partners too.

Not only will you have a fantastic time but your participation also means donations to the various wildlife projects, thus you are helping wildlife conservation efforts.

Guided throughout by Dr Peter Brothers, Wildlife Veterinarian and registered National Tourist Guide, Dr William Fowlds, Wildlife Veterinarian in the Eastern Cape, researchers, and various local guides, you will be given a unique and rare insight into the world of wildlife in Southern Africa.

Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime safari, while helping to conserve Africa’s wildlife through your participation……..
