Brothers Safaris Newsletter August 2008

It has been a busy year and a particularly busy winter here, hence our silence, but we plan to be in touch more regularly with our new newsletter format, so please enjoy this first edition. We are also in the process of designing a brand new website, which should be up and running within a few weeks, so please visit regularly to check out the new site, since it will be fun and far more interactive
Recent AVS Safaris

In June we hosted a group of 23 veterinarians and staff from Boehringer Ingelheim in Holland. The veterinarians were guests of this veterinary pharmaceutical company and were all in South Africa to attend an international pig conference. Before the conference they spent a few days with us, during which we enjoyed some game viewing in northern Kwazulu-Natal Province and immobilised an elephant! The elephant cow needed her tracking collar replacing since the batteries were running flat, and the herd’s movement and behaviour need to be monitored. “Boga”, as this fearsome matriarch is known, has quite a reputation locally, but luckily Peter was darting her from a helicopter. After locating the herd and getting Boga into a suitable area, she was darted. All proceeded well and the guests and staff of Boehringer Ingelheim all had a fantastic hands-on experience. On recovery Boga did not hold true to her reputation, thankfully, and instead of chasing off after us, quietly retreated into the bush to link up with the rest of the herd again. A very special word of thanks to Boehringer Ingelheim for sponsoring this procedure and also donating a substantial sum of money, on behalf of each participant, to the Space for Elephants foundation and the Black rhino conservation programme in this reserve (run by WWF and KZN-Wildlife)

AVS Wildlife Immobilisation & Conservation Course

We have run two AVS Wildlife Immobilisation & Conservation Courses and an AVS ADVANCED Wildlife Immobilisation & Conservation Course this winter. The courses were well attended with students from the USA, Australia, Taiwan and Brazil attending. It is the first time we ran the advanced course and it went very well with delegates getting even more hands on experience than before, loading and firing darts at patients under our supervision, and vaccinating giraffe from a helicopter! This year we moved a section of the course to the northern Cape and delegates on all courses had the opportunity to fly and dart (with a paintball gun on the Standard Course) from a Robinson 44 helicopter, which of course was a major highlight for them! On one of the courses students participated in nearly 50 immobilisations in the 16 days they spent with us, and species they worked with included cheetah, lion, buffalo, oryx, blue wildebeest, sable and roan antelope – not too bad for a first visit to South Africa… We have spread our dates for the courses a little better next year and have 4 Standard Wildlife Immobilisation & Conservation Courses (one summer and three in our winter) and one Advanced Wildlife Immobilisation & Conservation Course (for vet students that have attended the standard course before and for veterinarians already in practice). The courses already have over 40 delegates provisionally booked on them so if you are interested in attending, best be quick and get your name to us/book a spot!

Remember that our veterinary courses have been submitted to the South African Veterinary Council and approved for continuing education/continuing professional development by the council, reflecting the quality of the course and tuition offered.

SYMCO 2008

This year Brothers Safaris once again assisted the students of Onderstepoort Veterinary Faculty in hosting their bi-annual symposium on the Sustainable Utilisation of Wildlife in Southern Africa. 60 foreign delegates and 20 South Africa delegates, representing 25 countries, had a very busy 16 days early in July and participated in multiple immobilisations, involving cheetah at the De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Centre, white rhino and buffalo in Kruger National Park, and white rhino and lion in Pilanesberg National Park. The program was jam packed, but as always the veterinary students found time to socialise too, and a good time was had by all! Due to the soccer world cup being held in South Africa in 2010, it has been decided to hold the next symposium in 2009, and Brothers safaris are proud to once again be associated with the planning and running of the symposium.
